Alter your Driving Habits…

• Driving alone is expensive and is harder on the environment. If possible, organize a carpool with co-workers who live nearby.
• Plan your trips ahead of time to effectively manage your time and accomplish multiple errands in one outing. Fewer trips will reduce your overall transportation costs.
• Re-think your routes to avoid excessive start and stop conditions. Vehicles burn more fuel during acceleration, so routes with less congestion, lighter traffic volumes, and better flow will reduce fuel consumption.
• While driving, accelerate slowly and coast gradually to a braking stop whenever possible. Make it a new habit to keep your foot off the accelerator pedal as much as you can, this optimizes fuel economy.
• Observe the speed limit, fuel efficiency declines considerably at speeds above 50 mph. And even though you cannot drive 50 mph on the expressway, by using the slowest lane and driving at the lowest allowed speed will save fuel.
• Set your Cruise Control as often as you can to help maintain an even, constant speed. Keeping the engine RPMs (revelations per minute) more consistent helps reduce excess fuel consumption.
• When possible, don’t idle and have your engine running while NOT moving. A running vehicle that is not moving creates a mileage of zero. On cold winter mornings, bundle up and keep the vehicle warm-up to a minimum.
• Keep your windows up to trim your fuel bill. A vehicle is the most aerodynamic when restrictive air forces are NOT rushing into the interior space.
• Maintain your fuel supply. Don’t allow the fuel level to get so low that you’ll be forced to buy at the first station you see. Plan ahead so you have the flexibility to shop around for a better price.
• Reduce overall vehicle weight to improve mileage. Remove unnecessary items you don’t regularly use to increase efficiency.

Maintaining your Vehicle…

• Be mindful of the efficiency of the vehicle you drive. If you are in the market to purchase a new or used vehicle, pay close attention to the fuel efficiency ratings.
• Keep your tires inflated to the proper level; this can improve gas mileage by .6% on average. Refer to your owner’s manual for recommended tire pressure.
• Using the correct motor oil blend and rating (as recommended by the manufacturer) can boost fuel economy. Keep your oil and filter changed at regular intervals, and maintain the proper level in-between. Dirty oil can affect not only wear and tear on the engine components but also reduce fuel efficiency.
• Maintaining the correct wheel alignment not only improves overall tire life but also helps to save fuel. Misaligned tires create extra drag, increasing rolling resistance, and decreasing miles per gallon. With road hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, and debris, the alignment should be checked every six to twelve months.
• Keeping your engine in tune can improve fuel economy by as much as 4%, as well as reduce harmful emissions. This includes regular maintenance items such as air filters, spark plugs, and replacing faulty oxygen sensors.

“To promote interest in the history and cultural heritage of Sanilac County. To collect, preserve, and exhibit archival records and information, materials, objects and buildings relating to the history of Sanilac County and the State of Michigan.”

The historical Bark Shanty-Aitkin House will be moved to the Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum located 228 S. Ridge Street in Port Sanilac, Michigan. The home was originally built in 1853 near the Bark Shanty Marina. It was among the first homes build in Port Sanilac, and one of the oldest still in existence. William H. Aitkin grew up in the home; he practiced law and was a prominent citizen of Croswell, Michigan. After Williams’s death his family honored his memory with a fund to the Croswell library, and in March 1931 it was dedicated as the William H. Aitkin Memorial Library.

Be Proactive –

Before the winter season begins, inspect all your tires carefully. Look at the tread depth, signs of uneven wear, abnormal sidewall bulges, or surface cracking. If any one of these items is deficient, it’s time for replacements. Winter Tires –

For even more sure-footed road travel, consider having true “winter tires” installed on your vehicle. Winter tires are designed to handle the unique challenges of driving in the coldest months of the year. From their specially designed tread patterns to the chemical compounds in the rubber, they are built specifically to provide better grip and more control in cold, winter conditions. Vehicle Maintenance –

Next, make sure your vehicle is ready for the onset of colder weather and hazardous driving conditions. For recommended winter vehicle maintenance and a suggested list of items to carry, read this blog article “Are you ready for Winter Driving”.

Fuel Gauge –

Another suggestion is to keep your fuel tank topped off as much as possible during colder weather. This can help prevent condensation in the fuel tank from freezing in the lines. And if you get stranded or caught in a traffic jam, you’ll have plenty of fuel.

Stay Home –

If the weather is really bad, the best advice is to just stay home (unless it’s an emergency). Sometimes it’s just not worth the chance of getting stuck or having an accident, so decide your risk analysis carefully. If you choose to venture out, make sure to let someone know when you are leaving, the intended route, and an estimated arrival time.

On the Road –

First and foremost, when roads are icy or snow-covered, decrease speed! This is the number one tip, often overlooked or forgotten. Slowing down gives you extra time to react to unexpected events, which is amplified when stopping distances are increased and steering control is decreased in adverse weather conditions. This is a lead-in for the second most important tip, increase the distance between you and other cars on the road. Slippery roads make stopping distances much more critical, so it’s better to overcompensate than risk the alternative.

Avoid the Skid –

Overall take it easy, avoid excessive acceleration, abrupt steering & hard braking; any of which can create traction loss resulting in sliding and or skidding. If your wheels do start to spin or you feel skidding, ease up on the accelerator and avoid slamming on the brakes. If you are traveling up a hill try not to stop midway, slowly build up speed to get some inertia going, and do not allow the wheels to spin.

Stopping and Braking –

Your tires have less traction on snow and ice, so braking becomes an important control factor. Braking gently to prevent locking up the wheels will increase the ability to steer and keep the vehicle moving in a straight, forward direction. Remember to start slowing down earlier and braking sooner as you approach a stop sign. If you have a newer vehicle with anti-lock braking systems (ABS), the system automatically optimizes braking and steering during icy conditions. If you do not have ABS, you need to manually pump the brakes on and off during slippery conditions to maintain control. For inexperienced drivers, it’s a good idea to find a large, empty parking lot after a fresh snowfall to practice this technique.

No Cruise –

During snow or slushy conditions, it’s a good idea to forgo hitting the cruise control button. When roads are wet, chances of black ice are greater, and cruise control systems could mask the effects which decrease your reaction time.

No Distractions –

It’s always important to keep your mind clear and your eyes on the road, but even more so during adverse weather conditions. Avoid talking on your cell phone, making unnecessary radio/climate control movements, or any other distractions that take your focus away from driving. Remember, you need to allow extra time to react to unexpected situations or road conditions… so the phone calls can wait.

All in All, I encourage everyone to follow these simple driving tips during adverse weather conditions. Most importantly… slow down, increase the distance between you and other cars on the road, and start braking sooner as you approach stop signs. It may take you longer to reach your destination, but it’s well worth the effort if it avoids an accident along the way!

With the seasonal change, it’s a great time to give your vehicle some temperature preparation maintenance…

ANTIFREEZE is a critical element to the longevity of an engine. Not only does it protect it from external freezing temperatures, but it helps to maintain a properly running engine temperature as well. Old or weak antifreeze begins to break down, reducing efficiency and could cause engine damage. It’s a good idea to have a complete radiator system flush at least every 5 years. If your vehicle coolant is less than 5 years old, then keep the fluid level topped off and use a hydrometer to indicate the freezing point; then adjust the antifreeze ratio as necessary.

ENGINE OIL can also be changed this time of year. Cold weather starts can be hard on an engine, even more so with dirty oil impacting flow. Review your owners’ manual and follow the recommendations for the proper oil type, weight, and viscosity. The BATTERY in your vehicle is another crucial item to check and maintain. The chemical reactions necessary to generate power within your battery are more difficult in cold weather. To make matters worse, your vehicle’s engine requires more current to turn it over during lower temperatures. Have your battery stressed-checked to be sure it’s up to the task, and be sure the connections are clean and corrosion-free.

WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID is a top priority for visibility during the winter, especially while traveling on salted roads. Make sure your windshield fluid reservoir is full and with the proper low-temperature fluid. Just because it’s blue in color does not mean it has the sufficient anti-freeze properties you need for colder temperatures.

WIPER BLADES work in tandem with the washer fluid, streaks and voids can impede visibility. The rubber compounds in wiper blades are less flexible in colder weather, decreasing their effectiveness. Special “winter” wiper blades have a thicker design and are specially conditioned to remain flexible. I highly suggest replacing your wiper blades before the cold weather settles in.

TIRES are what is in-between you and a slippery road; they can have a huge impact on safety! Inspect each of your tires carefully; look at the tread depth, signs of uneven wear, abnormal sidewall bulges, or surface cracking. If any one of these items is deficient, it’s time for replacements.
